GLASS HAIR – THE LATEST HAIR TREND AND HOW TO GET IT AT HOME

I know how near and dear beachy waves are to our hearts this summer, but it’s time to put the curling iron away. Sleek, shiny hair is THE look right now. We’ve talked about how to get it, how to wear it, and now, we’re taking it one step further.

I know how near and dear beachy waves are to our hearts this summer, but it’s time to put the curling iron away. Sleek, shiny hair is THE look right now. We’ve talked about how to get it, how to wear it, and now, we’re taking it one step further.

Because the newest trend is Glass Hair. Glass hair takes a blunt cut bob to its sleek and shining extreme, creating a look so smooth, perfect, and free of any frizz, wave, or flyways it looks like it was cut from, you guessed it, a sheet of glass.

Since you’re going to be seeing this exciting look everywhere in the next few weeks, here’s a deep-dive into it and how you can create the same look, no matter what your hair type is!

A New Name for a Classic Look

Before stylist Cash Lawless created glass hair for Jenna Dewan and  Kim Kardashian started rocking glass hair last week, debuting her razor-sharp cut with a mirror-like shine, it originally debuted in the 1960’s. Vidal Sassoon brought this look into popularity as the sharp, almost severe look went perfectly with the Mod look of the time which was known for geometric prints and bold colors. The style came back again in the late 1990’s when Victoria Beckham, A.K.A. “Posh Spice,” used it as her signature look, keeping the sleek look with her designer little black dresses.

Look to the Silk Press

Taraji P. Henson, Rihanna, and even Michelle Obama have all shown off their own ultra-sleek, razor-sharp, high-shine bobs, using a technique called the Silk Press. Primarily used for natural hair, this is a gentler method of relaxing curls than most traditional methods. Designed to hold moisture to prevent frizz or curling using a blow dryer, ceramic straightening iron, and deep conditioning treatments, the result of the silk press is dramatic, eye-catching, and versatile enough to wear for formal events or a casual occasion.

Get Glass Hair at Home

If you want to give glass hair or the silk press a shot, don’t be intimidated. You can absolutely recreate it at home with the right tools and a few steps. Well, after you have your hair cut into a blunt-cut bob. Leave that step to the professionals! But after that, just follow these steps:

  • Use a gentle hair cleanser and conditioner to ensure hair is clean and hydrated
  • Use a dime sized drop of styling cream on damp hair before blow drying it to keep its hold and prevent frizz and flyaways.
  • Blow dry hair with a round brush with the air flow pointed downward to keep the hair cuticle closed.
  • Massage a few drops of shine serum through your hair prior to straightening it.
  • Divide hair into 1-inch sections and straighten hair in smooth, fluid motions
  • Finish hair with a few drops of shine serum to get a reflective look and seal it
